We are planning on taking the train from Rome to Sorrento for our honeymoon. I have heard that the train from Naples to Sorrento does not run on bank holidays. We are planning on traveling Aug. 15 (Feast of the Assumption) to Sorrento. Does anyone have any info or advice for traveling in Italy on this day? Thanks
This is a local commuter train so I would doubt it doesn't run on a holiday but I guess anything is possible. Did you try to get answers on this site by going into the transportation section?
Renee, Try TrenItalia (train italy's website- national train company): http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD If they don't say anything, I would assume that the trains would be sparse or not running. Italy is famous for shutting down on holidays (and Aug 15th is a big one). If they can't shut down- they go on strike! Good luck with that. There is also possibly (if they run) a ferry that will take you to sorrento from naples:

If the trains do run you must go downstairs in the Naples train station and catch the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento which is the end of the line.
The train from Naples to Sorrento is the Circumvesuviana train (www.vesuviana.it). It's the local commuter train. I doubt that it ever stops running completely. As with buses, iit is likely that there could be a reduced schedule on Sundays and holidays. There are three other options. 1) The Marozzi bus from Rome Tiburtina train station to Sorrento, 2) the Curreri bus line (http://www.curreriviaggi.it/) and, 3) the ferry from Naples to Sorrento.
