Trains

HI All, Since everyone is so helpful, we wanted to try again. We naively, made our accommodation reservations in Venice, Cinque Terre and Florence in that order without any regard as to how we are going to get from one city to the other by train. HELP!!!! Any advice is most welcome. We are traveling in September.

Trains will be the easiest option. Trenitalia is the website for the government owned train line. Go there to find the times and prices for each of your routes. You must use the Italian place names- Venezia, Firenze, etc. For your CT routing, you must specify which of the villages you will be staying in. Expect to have at least one change of trains on each leg. If you are new to Italian train riding, read up on the Man in Seat 61 website.

Venice to Cinque Terre will be your longest trek. Usually you will change trains at Florence (Firenze) and then go to La Spezia, and then change again to get into the CT. Easier to get back to Florence obviously and you can take a high speed from Florence to Rome . We have never booked ahead of time other than maybe a day ahead for our trips, but travel a bit more off season than September. Someone else can maybe chime in to say if needed. I like the flexibility to decide when I'm leaving a place.

If any of your trips involve Freccia (high speed) trains, and some of them will, and you already have your accommodation dates booked, then you can save money buying the discounted tickets well in advance. But those tickets are restricted to only that specific train on the time and date specified. There's no advantage to buying full fare freccias or any regional tickets in advance.
