Trains/Automobiles in Milan/Lake District

What do I need to know about using the trains in Milan and the Lake District vs renting a car? Advantages, disadvantages, caveats? Thanks!

In Milan, a car is as useful as a 30 lb lump of lead in your back pack.

"Lake District" covers a lot--- Lake Como is easily reached by train

Depending what/where you have in mind, a rental car might be useful

You also can take the train from Milan to varenna and then use the mid lakes ferry to visit several towns....views from ferry are great

carol,

As I said in your other thread on this subject.....

"Renting a car is not the best idea, as there are certain potentially expensive "caveats" to be aware of. The car would likely be parked, gathering dust and incurring parking charges for much of your stay, so not cost effective."

From what I can gather in reading your posts, you'll be travelling to areas that are all well served by trains or other public transit. Unless you plan on traveling to places not well served by public transit, a car is about as useful as a boat anchor.

If you need more information on the "potentially expensive caveats" that I mentioned above, post another note here.
