My husband will finish work around 5 pm on Friday in Mantova. I am wondering if it would be best to rush and get on the evening train to Rome and get a room in Rome for the night or should we relax...let him finish his work and then take an overnight train. Isn't it cheaper to sleep on the train? What about showering? We have a very busy day in Rome planned and I want to make the absolute best of it since we only have Saturday and Easter Sunday. Is it safe to sleep on the train? Do the accomodations in 2nd class on Trenitalia allow you bunks? What is your opinion?
I don't think there will be a night train from Mantova to Rome. You will have to leave that evening or the next morning. If you caught a train around 5:45PM that evening (assuming you make your connections, and take a Eurostar), you would be arriving in Rome at about 11:15PM, so you would be looking for your hotel around midnight (in which case, take a cab if it's not near the station). This would give you a jump to be able to tour the next day. This would be the latest train you could catch that day from Mantova to Rome.
If you can't catch that train, you can catch one early the next morning at 6 or 7AM to arrive in Rome at 11AM or 12PM, which would still give you half a day to explore. But, if you only have 2 days to explore all of Rome, I would try to catch that last train around 5:45PM so you will have the whole next day to explore.
BTW, with it being crowded right at Easter, I would try to reserve the Eurostar portion of the train trip at least a few days in advance.
