I am looking at options for trains or buses from Agrigento to Ragusa. I would even entertain a train/bus to Gela and then take a taxi to Ragusa but not first choice. Originally we planned to leave Agrigento on Sunday April 13, 2025. I would prefer this but Sunday's aren't good days to travel this stretch by public transportation. I read on a blog that Trentalia has arranged many more bus options on weekdays to get from Agrigento to Ragusa. Correct? I could rearrange my itinerary to leave Monday April 14. I have been using Rome2Rio but it doesn't seem to show such options. I could plan 5 night in Palermo instead of 4 or 4 nights in Trapani instead of 3 and this would shift me away from Sunday travel out of Agrigento to Monday 4/14. We don't leave Sicly until 4/24. The rest of the trip will base in Siracusa and Catania with day trips to places on the east coast side. Any comments on public transportation from Agrigento to Ragusa. I want to spend 2-3 nights in Ragusa before heading to Siracusa. Not rush it.
Sundays are extremely challenging if you want to travel by bus in Sicily. I'd avoid doing that since you have the time to do so.
Rome2Rio is howlingly unreliable and shouldn't be used for more than trying to determine what forms of transportation exist--and even that information has been shown to be incorrect in some cases. The frequencies, travel times and fares are often laughable. For trains in Sicily, go to https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html.
I'm not aware of buses run by Trenitalia, though there certainly could be some, especially if there's a need to replace trains due to track work. I don't see any buses on the Trenitalia schedule for the dates I spot-checked in March, April and May. However, the trains would be regionals, and no one would be buying tickets for those now; the fares don't change, there are no assigned seats and the trains cannot sell out. I guess there's a possibility the schedule will be beefed up before April.
I believe many people who want to visit Agrigento (which I skipped) opt to rent a car for that portion of their Sicilian itineraries, because public transportation between Agrigento and the southeast corner of the island (including Siracusa) is very limited.
It looks like you can take FlixBus on either Sunday or Monday from Agrigento to Catania, but the choices are 6:00 am or 5:30 pm and it takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours. Supposedly, Etna Trasporti bus then goes from Catania to Ragusa but I didn't dig into that.
This part of Sicily is difficult by public transportation. We ended up renting a car when we left Siracusa.
There is a train to Gela but it takes almost 5 hours with changes.
Trentalia only has buses on routes that they are doing train work not otherwise.
Thanks for your responses. I have to say, when traveling in France last April, Rome2Rio worked well for us to find bus and train options. It was very helpful. I wasn't so concerned about exact cost, I just want to know what mode options, dates and times were available from point A to B. We typically bought our tickets that day at the stations. After searching a bit more and shifting our itinernary to depart from Agrigento for Syracuse April 13 and then on to Ragusa April 17 I had a bit more luck. Between FlixBus and SAIS it appears we have a few reasonable options. Not ideal but workable given we are on the island for 21 days. I will check what I found with the bus lines to make sure. I read, going into this no-car plan, that working with the various bus lines on the island can be a challenge and I would say yes, it is, especially for a foreigner who speaks/reads minimal Italian :)
