Reading the helpline, most people say to buy train tickets point to point a day ahead of travel. I just happened to check out the train website and most of the trains I need are sold out? (2nd class) Can that be? Should I go ahead and buy this far in advance?

You can only buy from Trenitalia 60 days in advance... so August 17 or so check it out :)

Relax, there will be plenty of seats available at that time of year. Wait till you get within the 60 day window.
