Trains

Hello all, so we are thinking of taking two trains on our trip to Italy: one from Rome to Florence on December 19th and one on January 2nd from Naples to Rome. I will be with my two kids. How likely would it be that a Trenitalia train would be canceled because of a strike? I cannot be stranded, especially in Naples because we fly out the next day.

Thanks for all of your help!!!

Since it is too early for strikes to be planned and announced for December and January, no one knows. But both those routes are served by Italo, the private train company. I have read (but not confirmed) that this company is less vulnerable to strikes by the employees than the state-run Trenitalia. Of course if there are strikes involving the infrastructure (tracks, switches, etc.) then all trains would be affected.

Having experienced a train strike in France for the entire duration of a 10 day trip, be aware of your options. For example you can always on the lower cost end take the bus (the company flixbus.com serves Naples to Rome) or on the higher end a taxi as options.

The contracts of transportation workers stipulate that strikes cannot be declared between Dec. 17th and January 7th.

Probability ---- ZERO. !!! Always lots of threats for strike but few happen. In our 50+ years of traveling in Europe at all time, only one train strike and that was in Spain. Don't worry about it. Even with strike, there are always a few trains running.

I assume you are planning to spend the night in Rome prior to your departure. You should not come from Naples on your departure day.
