train vs planefor Venice to Amalfi

Everything I have seen so far suggests train for travel but in my research i am finding it might be cheaper and faster to travel by plane for part of the trip. We will be traveling from Venice to Amalfi Coast, where we will spend 4 days. Then head to Rome for 4 days. I am thinking RyanAir for Venice to Naples (bus or taxi to Amalfi) then train to Rome. Thoughts?

I agree that flying is the best bet, however, not on Ryan Air. Easyjet has flights from €30 one way before baggage charges. the bus from the Naples airport to the Sorrento train station is €10..

The train takes a little bit over 5 hours from city centre to city centre, without the hassle of transport to and from airport, security checks, luggage belts and what not, with prices from EUR 39,90 when bought in advance.

First of all, are you going to the city of Amalfi or somewhere else on the Amalfi Coast?

A flight from Venice to Naples is NOT the best option and especially NOT by Ryanair! As I recall, they may use Treviso which is not exactly close to Venice. When all is considered (travel to & from airports, check-in, security, waiting, boarding & deplaning), using a high speed Freccia or Italo train will be faster and much less of a hassle! It will probably also be considerably cheaper if you can get discounted advance purchase tickets.

Besides the hassle with airport pre-arrival check-in times, security, and ports may not not be conveniently located, consider also that the budget airlines can soak you for checked luggage. If you end up looking at flights, look at the extra charges very carefully.

You might also explore a fast train to Salerno and a bus or ferry to Amalfi (the town) from there instead of Naples? Yes, it can make a difference exactly where you're headed on the coast.

As noted, RyanAir "Venice" flights go out of Treviso, about a half-hour further than Marco Polo airport, and accessible by bus, not boat.

Here's one reason that RyanAir is not the most popular budget airline in Europe.....

Lots of people use them and are happy, but in my case I won't be using them again unless there's absolutely NO other option! My preferred budget airline in Europe is easyJet and so far I've found their service to be great. One hint though - it really helps to pay for Speedy Boarding and some of the other extras.

This year, I chose to take the train from Venice to Naples just because it was more comfortable and less hassle, even though the journey was almost an hour longer (door-to-door). Depending on where you're staying in Venice, it can take a long time to get to the airport. And I was staying near the train station in Naples. As I recall, the price of the flight and the train were about the same. However, it would have cost me to get to/from the airports.

Are you going to Amalfi town? Then it makes sense to take the train to Salerno and then one bus (from the train station) or one ferry (a short walk from the train station) to Amalfi.

If you go to Amalfi, the train is probably faster door to door. Just go to Salerno instead of Naples, then take the bus or ferry from there.

The plane is faster than the train, but there are also transfers from/to airports to take into consideration (and Ryanair uses the far away Treviso airport) and of course the security procedures which require you to be at the airport check in at least 60 minutes prior to actual departure.
