We are planning to take the train (probably the high-speed) to Florence and then rent a car to visit a small cooking school for about a week in Tuscany, then drop the car back in Florence and go to a hotel in Florence then train back to Venic to go home. We wanted to pick up and drop the car outside of Florence near a train station but have easy access to inner city Florence after we drop it off. What do you recommend?
We used SIXT in Florence. It was walking distance from the train station, but outside the city center. They gave us easy directions to get out of town toward Siena. Dropping off the car was very easy too.
If you drop the car off at the airport outside Florence, you can take the bus to the train station which is really pretty centrally located...maybe a 20 min. walk to the center of town. That way you avoid driving in the city of Florence, but can get to the center quickly. From the bus or train station, you can catch a cab to your hotel if you'd rather not walk.
The car rental companies are just to the right of the airport as you look at it...and the buses are to the left. The airport is very small and easy to navigate on the outside.
