Train trips in Italy and Switzerland

We are leaving Venice on April 24 by train (having been in Florence and Rome) and are wanting to go to Interlaken with a one night stop in the Lake District. Suggestions for train route to Interlaken and reasonable, scenic place to stay in Lake District?

Maria,

That's a fairly easy trip, but it would help if you could be more specific on which part of the "lake district" you're planning to visit?

The trip from Venice to Interlaken would be LONG, so it's good that you're going to break up the trip with a night or two on the lake.

Check the Trenitalia website to get some ideas on which trains might fit your schedule best. You'll undoubtedly be going through Milano Centrale, so that would be a good place to start.

Cheers!

Thanks Ken, We are open to stay at any town along the train stops. RS recommended Varenna so are leaning toward it but are open to other suggestions.

It looks like the Bernina Express would take us East. Where would we transfer to get to Interlaken?

Would we have to take the train from Venice to Milan and then transfer up to Varenna or is there a cut off?

Hi Maria. Varenna (Lake Como) is really pretty. I would recommend staying in Varenna & then taking the ferry to Bellagio, Menaggio, etc. I really enjoyed staying in Varenna; it was a relaxing end to our hectic trip last September. Have a great time.

Thank you Steve. That is a good suggestion.

When we take the train from Venice do we change trains before Milan to go up to Varenna or do we have to go to Milan and transfer north to Varenna?

Thanks Steve, the Swiss site really helped. After a lot of navigating around I found a map of Switzerland with the train routes. I found the Italian one so confusing so think we'll wait and get tickets there.

It seems easier to just go up from Varenna to Interlaken but this is our only time we will be in Switzerland so need an opinion from someone who has been there on whether it is worth it to take the Berninia Express when we have to circle around, stay a night somewhere else and take 4 hrs more on it to get to Interlaken.

Check both the diebahn.de (german) and the sbb.ch (swiss) web sites. The Myswitzerland.com tourist offical site has nice maps for the various scenic trains too!

1.In checking the time table for the Bernina Express it looks like when we get to St Moritz we need to stay the night as you said Steve and the next train doesn't come through until the next afternoon? Or is there a bus or different train I didn't see that goes on to Bern the same day.

2.Does anyone know what the scenery is like on a train that is labled B that goes straight North from Lugano to Luzern?

3.We 3 adults are taking a train from Florence to Rome, Rome to Venice, Venice to Milan in Italy. In Switzerland we are taking a tain from Milan to Interlaken, up to the Jungfraigh weather permitting and taking the Golden Pass from Interlaken to Geneva. Should we go point to point or get a 3 country rail pass? It didn't look like there was a 2 country one for Italy and Switzerland?
