train trip from Cinque Terre to Monaco???

We will be in the Cinque Terre for 6 days. We plan on hiking the trails between towns, vegging out, train ride to Santa Margherita/Ligure and hike to Portofino and back. Is a train trip to Monaco worth taking maybe stopping in San Remo?
Any other thoughts on what to do instead. Grazie again !! Jim

It's a very slow train ride to Monaco. It's about 5+ hours. In the same length of time you can travel from the CT to virtually anywhere in Italy north of Naples.
I didn't know there was a hiking trail between S.Margherita and Portofino (driven there so many times, but I guess I'm too lazy to walk). I would enjoy the beach in Monterosso the whole time. Maybe visit Pisa by train for a couple of hours. I don't care much about Genoa, but maybe you might find something you like. Florence is 2 and 1/2 hours away. A tour of the marble quarries in the Apuane Alps near Carrara might be interesting.

Jim, As Roberto mentioned, a day trip to Monaco is not practical due to the travel times involved. You certainly won't have time to stop in San Remo along the way. You should be able to find lots to do in the Cinque Terre for six days. A few comments..... > For the day trip to Portofino, you could either walk from Santa Margherita Ligure OR take the boat. It's a very pleasant ride (about 20 minutes or so), and you'll arrive right in the main harbour, perhaps amongst several yachts. > You could also take the local boats (weather permitting) from the Cinque Terre to Porto Venere. It's also a posh resort and similar to Portofino in some ways. While there you could take the local boats to the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. One note about the local C.T. boats - as I recall, they don't stop at Corniglia. > You could visit Levanto for a day. It's only about 5 minutes from Monterosso by train, and it's a reasonably short walk from the station to the downtown area and beach. > You didn't say when you'd be in the Cinque Terre, but one point to note is that the Sentiero Azzurro trails are all still closed (AFAIK). It's expected that at least some of them will be opened in April when the tourist season starts, but nothing definite on that yet. Cheers!
