TRAIN? Trenitalia Question for buying tickets

Hi, I'm trying to buy (or at least reserve) a ticket on Trenitalia and although the schedule shows up, there are no fares to purchase... I get the pop-up: "We are sorry but the chosen solution is not purchasable"

Does that mean there are no seats left on the train?
Does it mean I can get on the train but must buy while there?
What does that mean, exactly? And can I still catch that train at that time?

thanks!

I think I'd have to travel from the airport down to Trieste to catch a train that would pass by the Monfalcone station (that's supposedly the closest to the airport) anyway, right?

I'd be trying to get on the 18:07 train.

brian,

You are absolutely right. Monfalcone is closer to the airport than is Trieste and you would be backtracking if you departed from Trieste Centrale.

The only time that you might find it difficult to get a seat is directly after a strike has ended (4hr. or 24hr.) and people are scrambling to get on the first available train to their destination. No worries though, your hotel should be able to keep you informed of any pending (if any) rail strikes.

First of all, the Trenitalia site does not accept US credit cards. (Your card will work in the ticket machines at Italian train stations or at a station window.)

Second, for regional trains the Trenitalia site will only show fares for dates a few days in advance.

Third, for any type of train you'll get the message you described if you enter a date more than 90 days from today.

Enter a date less than 90 days from today and you'll get timetables and fares for fast trains. Enter a date within two or three days from today and you'll see timetables and fares for all trains, includiing regional trains.

First - thanks! I didn't know that don't take cards from US online.

Second, it's for friday Feb 12th, so that may be soon enough. But I noticed it's only intercity trains that show any price (so I have to wait to get prices til closer to my departure?)

It is true though, that the seats are NOT sold out? right?

You didn't indicate where and when you wanted to go. Only under very usual circumstances will you ever find a train completely sold out. And often there is more than one train an hour to any popular location so there are a lot of seats available. The only advantage to buying early is some discounts may be available. Using the train in Italy is very easy and relaxing.

Seats will not be sold out.

What's the route for which you are trying to find fares on 12 February?

we're flying into Trieste and want to catch the Monfalcone > Venezia SL that evening (about 40 mins after the plane is supposed to land!)

We'll see if we can catch the bus or if we need to taxi it to catch the 18:07 train to Venice...

Thanks for the reassurance on the not-sold-out part!

brian,

It's much easier just to buy your tickets in Italy, either from a staffed ticket window or from a ticket machine.

I'm not familiar with the airport in Trieste, but catching a train 40-minutes after arrival might be "pushing the limit".

The bahn.de website shows a train departing Trieste Centrale at 18:44, arriving Venezia Santa Lucia at 20:49 (2H:05M, no changes, Regional so no reservation required).

Happy travels!

Why not board a train at Trieste Centrale? Trains to Venice depart at 17:02, 17:44, 17:56, 18:44, 18:56, and 19:18. The first one is a EuroStar Italia train that goes to Mestre. The others are regional trains and go all the way to Santa Lucia. FYI, all of the above trains stop at Monfalcone.

You must encountered a glitch on the Trenitalia site. The information above is for 12 February and I found it on the site.

I thought it might be a tight schedule, but with carry-ons, and maybe a taxi to the train station (it's a 14 minute bus ride, supposedly), we might just make it.

We'll see if the plane lands on schedule and go from there.

You already got your question answered and some good advice, but I just wanted to say good luck! The trains can be a big hot mess during Carnevale!
