Train travel with planned "lay-overs".

We are a group of four traveling for 15 days next fall starting in Rome. We are planning to use the trains for most of our city to city travel. But, what I have not yet figured out is, if we can buy a ticket from La Spezia to Venice and get off along the way...taking a layover, and then continuing on with the same ticket. We'd like to stop in Parma or prehaps Bologna for a number of hours. We might like to do this from Venice to Rome, too. I know that I can purchase indiviual tickets, but I wonder if that is necessary.

All trains except Regional require a reservations. Therefore you would need individual ticket with specific times for each leg. However, with a regional train ticket you could hop on and off at anytime with in a 24 hr period. The regional tickets are also the cheapest.

Frank (or somebody else who knows for sure) - are you sure about the 24 hour validity for regional tickets? Seems like I heard (or read on the ticket?) that they were only good for 6 hours after validated.

Bob, you're correct... but because it's Trenitalia it's not that simple: The validity time begins when validating the ticket. Travel must be completed within 6 hours after validation for travel up to 200 km, within 24 hours to travel to higher mileage, subject to exceptions provided by specific regional rates. Tickets purchased online are only valid for 4 hours from the departure time of the train selected and do not need validation. (To add to the confusion, another part of the website says that online Regionale tickets are only good for three hours???). So there are limits depending on the length of your travel distance and whether you purchased the tickets in a station or online. In addition, there are "exceptions" specific to certain travel zones (region) you may be traveling in. Probably safer to just buy each leg separately.

Well, yes, just as confusing as I thought. It was interesting to find, that if I purchase separate tickets, it was about 4 euros cheaper. However, this is all speculation, since I will not be able to purchase actual tickets until much closer to my trip.
