Has any one been to the train station in Viareggio? I'm traveling in Italy this May and would like to go from Venice to CT; arriving in Monterosso as early in the day as possible. Trenitalia shows the route with the earliest arrival changing trains a few times. The only concern is at Viareggio where we only have 11 minutes to change trains. Does anyone know if this possible?
How early do you want to leave Venice? Be cautious as it takes a bit of time on the vaporetto to get to the train station.
Next, Monterosso is far enough north into the CT that there are runs from Venice that go through Milan and Genoa. There are no direct trains without train changes. Expect 1-2 train changes. The fastest run seems to leave Venice at 7:47am. The journey is just over 5.0hrs. You will change trains in Florence and Pisa. You have a 13min train change at Pisa. This is OK. Trains from Pisa to the CT are frequent throughout the day. You can leave at 5:43am or 6:03am but these are almost 7.0hr journeys. Oddly, one train goes through Milan, the other through Florence. Both arrive in Monterosso at 12:39pm. Your 7:47am train arrives at 12:54pm or 15 minutes after the two much earlier trains.

The train station at Viareggio is small. Changing trains is easy. You get off one train and walk to the platform for the next. As long as you're not carrying a ton of luggage, 11 minutes is plenty of time for a transfer.
Thank you very much, as long as the station is small I feel comfortable going this route. Also I'm traveling light so luggage shouldn't be much of a problem. - One more question, has anyone tried the serenade gondola in Venice offered for prebooking through Viatar? I've heard gondola rides are very expensive and it seemed pretty reasonable. Thanks again!
