I'm alarmed at how long the train ride is from Venice to San Benedetto del Tronto (5+ hrs). I was planning on going from there, stopping a night in San Benedettto and then going on to Rome. Is this not the route of the fast trains?
The unfortunate answer to your question is: the route does have fast trains but it still takes a while.... It apears that there are basically 2 viable ways to get from Venice to San Benedetto del Tronto on the train.
Unfortunatel, both methods take slightly more than 5 hours. So pick your poison.. there is an interCity train leaving Venice 07:15 arriving San Benedetto del Tronto at 12:46. there are no train changes, so once you get on you are good till arrival. It is not the slowest regional train but it is not a fast Eurostar either. Advantage is the 36.50 2nd class fare. the solution with faster trains has a couple of "problems". You can't leave Venice until 16:27, when you'll take one of the fastest Eurostars to Bologna. You will then switch to Eurostar City train, not as fast and a few more stops. With those two trains you'll reduce your on train time to a bit over 4 hours but you'll have to switch trains in Bologna and wait an hour for the second train. So your overall time in transit is only slightly shorter and the 2nd class fare is now 64.50
Thanks so much for all the info! I appreciate it!
