Train travel to Rome from Wengen, Switzerland

I'm trying to figure out the best way to travel by train to Rome from Wengen, Swizterland. There will be two of us. We will be traveling to Florence after spending a couple days in Rome.

In general there is only one pathway to do this. From Wengen, you take the cog train down to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen, you take the local train out to Interlaken Ost. From there you take a 20-minute ride to Spiez. From Spiez, it's mostly straight south to southeast to Rome. You'll even stop in Florence on the way. There are several runs a day for this journey. The journey times range from just over 7hrs to 10hrs. Some runs require 4 transportation changes. Others require 5, 6 or 7 changes. Thus, it's important to choose your run carefully. The best run with the quickest time and fewest train changes goes from Spiez to Milan where you change trains for Rome. These trips are between 7-8hr journey. Check out the link below and you can see what I'm seeing on www.rail.ch http://gyazo.com/94a45f634c569b41fac8d6495c77fa07

Thank you Larry. What if we went back up to Zurich and then down. From what I've read it is about 7.5 hours from Zurich to Rome. Would it save us switching trains so many times and be round the same amount of travel time?

I've looked up the journey from Zurich HB (main) to Rome. 7+hrs and one train change in Milan. Not bad. Nice try. This is the run that routes through the Gotthard tunnel via Arth-Goldau. Still, it's 3hrs from Wengen to Zurich HB with 3-4 transportation changes (all trains). It's very scenic so it's your call. The link below shows what I see on www.rail.ch. I've expanded the 8:03 departure from Wengen so that you can see what the run looks like. http://gyazo.com/d9c599ba80574d1bf35a88379540381a
