Train Travel to Florence from Rome Airport

We are traveling to Florence after arriving at the airport in Rome at 9:40 a.m. Will I likely have enough time to get through customs, etc., to make the 11:08 train trip to Florence? And, should I buy my ticket in advance or wait until I arrive there?

It is iffy. If your flight is delayed, you’d most likely miss the train. I’d wait to buy the ticket. Worse comes to worse, you take a train from FCO to termini and then buy a separate ticket to Florence. There are frequent trains. We have done this 2 train option after an all night flight, and it wasn’t too bad.

Wait until you arrive. The price difference between nonrefundable advance Super Economy tickets and Base fare tickets is not all that big. 2 months from now a Super Economy ticket is 38.90 EUR and Base ticket is 64 EUR. If you are late, just go via Termini.

You can get a through ticket to Florence at the airport station, if you are willing to travel with Trenitalia all the way to your final destination. There is no need to make two separate purchases.
Since There is free wi-fi at FCO, if you install Trenitalia's app you could buy a ticket to Florence while waiting in line for Immigration.

If your flight arrives on time and you have only carry-on luggage, making the 11:08 train should be no problem. Timing for retrieval of checked luggage is iffy and could make it very tight. My last flight to Rome arrived a good hour late, at gate around 10:15-10:30, and I just made the 11:08 train. If I was unfamiliar with the airport and had made a wrong turn, I may have missed it. For that reason, I wouldn't buy tickets in advance.
