My family is traveling in Tuscany in June. My daughter, age 17, and son, age 20 will be leaving earlier than my husband and I. Would it be safe for them to travel without parents on the train from Florence to Rome airport (FCO)? Their flight departs at 10:30AM, so it would be a very early train. Is this a crazy idea?
The train is perfectly safe. Take a EuroStar train which is fast and every passenger has a seat reservation. I would suggest that they stay in Rome near Termini Station the night before the flight. The first train from Florence to Rome Termini departs at 5:50 and arrives at 8:24. The next Leonardo Express train to FCO departs at 8:52 with would have them at the airport about 9:30 - not enough time for a 10:30 flight.
I agree with the previous poster I traveled around Italy by myself last year and I am only 20. I had no problem with the trains, just make sure you get on the right one (I met others who got on a wrong train!) but I never had a problem. I do agree though it would be easier to stay overnight in Rome first, then take the flight out the next morning, the beehive is a wonderful place just 3 blocks from the train station, clean and safe it gets rave reviews even from Rick, you can get a couple beds in a dorm room or a private double.
Ttain is fine. Book first class with a seat reservation. As the others suggest you may need to look at your timing.
