Train travel Rome to Sorrento

I am wanting to take a high speed train from Rome to Naples and then I believe a regionale train from Naples to Sorrento.

Any suggestions on which website to use for high speed train bookings?
Is booking availability 120 days our from travel date?
I am travelling in April 2018
Thank you

Two train operator companies to choose from:
www.trenitalia.com
www.italotreno.it
Purchases are available 120 days prior.
Discounted tickets are not refundable or changeable, so make sure your travel plans are firm before purchasing online. Discounted tickets tend to run out early.
Full fare (“base”) tickets are always available, even the day you walk into the station minutes before departure. There are so many trains every hour, that they never fill up completely, so seats are never sold out. Therefore, unless you want discounted tickets there is no reason to purchase full base fare online.

There is also a direct bus to Sorrento twice a day from Rome. Cheaper and quicker. The train from Naples to Sorrento is a private commuter line that cannot be purchase on-line. Buy when you get there.

I like to use www.Trainline.eu because it shows you schedules and prices for both Trenitalia and Italo in one place. It also seems to be friendlier with American credit cards.

The Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento is dirty, slow and frequently unsafe. April weather might be pleasant enough to take the boat across the bay. That's a nice way to be on vacation while travelling.

Hi there,
I am also going to be booking fast train tickets for the 17th April from Rome to Naples and I will do this tomorrow, I have a price already - can see the times and prices, just waiting for the time-slot to become available (one more day) to add to shopping cart.
I have compared both prices on the trenitalia.com site and the https://www.italotreno.it/en sites.
We are also heading to Sorrento on the 17th and I am still debating which way to travel, possibly Circumvesuviana, or else for my hubbies benefit possibly the ferry as he loves the ocean, or else will do the bus which is very reasonably priced.

I have just succesfully booked tickets for our family of 4's train travel from Firenze to Roma on the Frecciargento (fast train) for on the 15 April 2018 (120 days out exactly) and I did get the 418 error message to start with (it was about GMT 4am and we are in NZ GMT +12 hours) but by 7am GMT I had no problems and the transaction went through.
My tickets have been emailed to me, it accepted a NZ credit card and I didn't need to register.

Good luck, I certainly was able to get a really good price.

High speed train from Rome to Naples then Circumvesuviana to Sorrento. But like Robert I would also recommend - take a taxi from Naples train station to Ferry station and then by boat. More scenic, comfortable, fresh air, significantly fewer pickpockets.

I'm not sure if it will be running in April, but you could also check the Campania Express for the trip from Naples to Sorrento. It's a nicer train than the Circumvesuviana, although either train will get you there.

Sairz, there are discounted tickets available on all the Rome-Naples high speed trains departing tomorrow. December 18 is The first day of xmas holidays when all school close.

You don't actually need to wake-up in the middle of the night or in the early morning for the 17th of April, relax. Would you hurry to get train tickets 120 days in advance in your home country? Of course not and Europeans do the same.

As you have discovered, it's 120 days in advance at the minute, italian time.

There are no pickpockets on the Campania Express, not fewer, because there are no crowds, standing is forbidden, it doesn't stop in the suburbs where they usually get on and any single ticket is checked before boarding. The Campania Express is used only by foreign tourists, the conductor would spot a pickpocket miles away and would just stand by him/her during the all journey.

The Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento is dirty, slow and
frequently unsafe.

Plenty of threads on this topic, so read them. With bags and/or at night it's not recommended, but otherwise, it's efficient (kind of) in the sense that it gets you there (albeit with about 20 stops between Sorrento and Naples Centrale, all in about 70 minutes) and cheaper than any other mode of transport.

We took it a couple times this last March to Naples from Sorrento and back, and it was like a TV show. Weird panhandling musicians getting on & off, that type of thing. Mind your own business, watch your goods and you will be fine.

Have you considered flying from Rome to Naples?
At the Naples Airport you can take a Airport Shuttle bus direct to Sorrento for 12 euros one way. I looked at both options for my September trip. I will be staying near Termini station but, I decided to go for the flight / shuttle bus option .

Taking a flight from Rome to Naples makes absolutely no sense, unless you are connecting from an incoming flight. Aside from the higher cost compared to the train or the bus option, flying takes 4 times as long as the train, once you factor in transfers to the airport, security procedures, and boarding procedures. The train journey is 70 min from the Termini station to Naples.
It takes 40 min to get to the Rome airport from Termini, plus another 60 minimum for check in and security before you can board. By the time you are airborne, I’m already in Sorrento.

The suggestion for taking the plane is crazy. Probably three times more expensive and three times slower. As for the Circum.... train, it is a commuter train not much different than the subway in Chicago or New York with the same level of being clean. It is not attractive - just a functional train serving a lots of people. We have ridden it several times over the past ten years or so, and never saw a pickpocket or had any other problem. It is crowded, slow, makes a lot of stops but it gets you there. Don't know what "frequently unsafe" means but we are not riding it at mid-night either.

We have taken the Circumvesuviana several times over the past few years. Never had a problem. Never saw anyone have a problem. Be sure you get on the right train since several leave from the same station and only one is going to Sorrento!

Hello

You didn't say if you were going to Sorrento after flying into Rome or just training into Termini. If you are flying into Rome (FCO) you could use the Fiumicino Express, a bus that leaves from Terminal 3 and goes directly to Napoli Centrale (the train station) where you can catch one of the regional trains. We did this when we flew from Philadelphia to Rome Sept 20th and it was great- clean, fast and inexpensive. It also saved us from going to Termini via Leonardo express then switching to a fast train to Naples. I'm not sure if the new train will be available in april, but we used the CV train to go back and forth to Sorrento from Naples and also from Sorrento to Pompeii. It is not clean and was packed in late september (the 20th to the 26th) but not different from any intercity subway. You must be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine. Message me if you want more info about the bus

I was looking for the same info that Suzanne was - getting from Rome to Sorrento - so was thankful for the info shared on this blog. I will be traveling in May. I like the idea of the express bus. Marie I sent you an email requesting more info on that please. I also love the idea of taking the ferry from Naples to Sorrento. Do you have to book the ferry ahead and if so does anyone have info on how to do that? I would appreciate it. Thank you!
