Train Travel Question - Sorrento to Rome

I've done my research and found that I need to take the Circumvesuviano train from Sorrento to Naples (Napoli-Garibaldi stop-Centrale Station) and then get an Express Train to Rome. My question is...Must I/Can I/Should I purchase train tickets for either train in advance or do we just purchase them when we get to the respective stations? Also, what train line is the Express Train? We will be on Capri and taking a hydrofoil to Sorrento first, so I'm not sure what time we will get to the train in Sorrento, so I'd rather just purchase the tickets at the train station unless I must book in advance.

No need to pre-purchase tickets. You won't be able to purchase tickets for the circumvesuviana as it's a commuter train. For the high speed train you can easily buy them the day of travel. Since you don't know exactly when you'll be traveling it would make no sense to by the ticket in advance only to have to try to change it. If you live in the U.S. ( not sure where Tinton Falls is) you won't be able to pre-purchase tickets anyway. The trains never sell out and since this is a popular journey they have many trains that run a day. Donna

Kerry, as the previous reply mentioned, you won't be able to pre-purchase tickets for the Circumvesuviana. You might to check the Trenitalia web site so that you have some idea of the departure times of trains from Naples to Rome. That will also give you an idea on which trains are EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita ("express"). There are a few slower (and cheaper) IC trains on that route, so that will give you some choices (the IC trains stop several times on route, while the ES/AV trains are direct). When you arrive in Naples, you can buy tickets from the ticket office or ticket machines (a credit card will probably be required). Happy travels!
