Train travel - La Spezia to Firenze - Have I left it too late?

Hi travelllers,

We have 3 nights in Cinque Terre and are then staying in Florence on the 1st July so need to book travel between La Spezia and Florence on that day.

Am trying to use various train sites (italiarail/trenitalia/lefrecce) to book the trip but at the moment the times available for a decent trip (~1.5 hours) is leaving at either 8:32am or 5:48pm on the 1st July. The other times through the day between these times seem to blow out to over 5 hours travel time. I have even tried bring the date forward to a date in May to see if it is related to the later release of the summer timetable, but am getting similar results.

Do I need to book one of these quicker trains times or is there going to be a better solution magically appear prior to then?

Cheers,
Paul

I see a lot more than those 2

Are you using the official Trenitalia site?

There are IC/Regional and IC/Freccia combinations

There will be more added when schedule updates June 9.

If I look on the Trenitalia site at trains on a random day in May, I see hourly departures with high speed trains. But July is likely too far out for those to have been loaded yet, so you're mostly seeing just the regionale trains. They do a major update in June, so you should see the Freccia options populate the site then.

The train schedules get updated in June, which is probably why you're seeing very little for July. If you look on Trenitalia.com for trains just a few days from now, you’ll see that there are very frequent departures. Also, most of the trains are Regionale, so there’s no need or benefit to reserving in advance. You’re fine, in other words.

OK, thank you all for the responses.

It appears when I do the search on trenitalia, the search gets "handed off" to the lefrecce website (even says "handoff=true" in the url???!!...) so maybe this is why I don't see all train journey times.

Anyway, that is comforting to know and have done a search for next week and can see the more regular trains.
Will continue to monitor and book when they come available.

Cheers,
Paul

Again, there is no need to book regional trains in advance. A person with a ticket bought a month in advance has no more right to board the train than someone who bought their ticket on their app 5 minutes before departure.

You are still on the Trenitalia site.

Paul,

I wouldn't bother buying advance tickets for that route, as many of the trains will be Regionale and they don't have reserved seats and there will be no price advantage to buying early. If one segment will be on a Freccia or InterCity, seat reservations will be provided with your tickets. Most of the trains on that route will have at least one change in Pisa Centrale.

In the same situation, I would just check the schedules the day prior to travel to figure out which departure works best for you. On the day of travel, go to the station a few minutes early and just buy the tickets there, either from a self service kiosk or a staffed ticket office. Don't forget to validate tickets prior to boarding!

Do you have a filter set to only look at high speed trains?

Note that high speed trains don't run between Pisa and Florence, so only the first leg to Pisa would be on the slower Cas of Frecce.

Without the filter, there are numerous choices throughout the day with durations of approximately 2.5 hours.
