Train travel Italy

How much time should I give between trains in Rome. We are traveling from Florence to Civitavecchia.

Thirty minutes is generous. You could cut it as close as 15 but I would not. You walk off the train, go to the head of the platform, check the departure board for the platform number and walk to the platform. Termini is one level and shaped like the fingers on your hand.

Fifteen minutes is not tight if your first train is on time.

The most important thing is to be ready to get off the train BEFORE you arrive in Rome. A few minutes before you get in, start gathering your belongings and moving toward the exit (you'll see lots of others doing the same). It's not like on an airplane, where you wait until the plane comes to a complete stop before getting up and gathering your things.

Get off the train, go right to the front of the platform, and find a departures monitor (be careful that it's not an arrivals monitor - just like at an airport, there are both kinds). Find your next train by departure time and train number, rather than by destination (unless you are SURE of your next train's final destination). Then go right to that track and get on the train.

That's it. Unless someone in your party has a mobility impairment, 15 minutes is fine. One more thing - do be sure to use the toilet on the first train well before you get near Rome. With a tight connection, you won't have time to use the bathroom in the station.
