train travel in Sicily

Hi, I'm looking for info on train travel after Cyclone Harry. I understand there are no trains running from Catania to Messina. Does anyone know if the trains are running from Cefalu to Messina and then using the train ferry across to Villa San Giovanni? It's the train ferry in Messina that I'm most concerned about, and hoping it's running. We will be there in mid March.

Thanks in advance for any updated info.

Go on trenitalia.com/en.html , pick March 16 as day of travel, an early time of departure and digit Cefalù and Messina Centrale in the From/to fields. Then click search and check if they use substitute buses on that line or trains are running.

I have no idea whether Harry hit the ferry port in Messina or not, but even if it did I doubt they need more than a couple of weeks to complete the repair works. Are the 3 direct Palermo-Naples daily trains running? You can Check it on the same Trenitalia site, if the Intercity trains' tickets are on sale, the train ferries must be ok.

Go to viaggiatreno.it where you can see Trenitalia trains in real time, divided into long distance and regional trains; on the same website, read "infomobilità" for updates news about closures. You will see that there are no trains between Messina and Taormina as the line is closed; about half mile has been washed out by sea waves. There is still some traffic between Taormina and Catania. The line between Messina and Palermo looks working.

Just checked Trenitalia site. Trains are definitely running today Cefalu to Messina. Know that the trio takes longer than you would expect as the train makes many stops. Try to sit on tge left side if the train so you’ll have sea views.
Where is your final destination?

Thanks for the great advice and Lachera, that website viaggiatreno.it was full of great updates. I can take the train from Cefalu to the mainland and that was my goal!
