train travel in Italy on May 1st

We need to be back in Rome on May 1st to overnight at the airport for a flight home on May 2nd. We are still in the planning stages, but most like will be travelling back form Sorrento or Naples. How concerned should we be about train schedules on May 1st? Our rough itinerary thus far is go to Salerno for 2-3 days first after landing in Rome and then work our way to Amalfi with for a few days, then Sorrento for a few days . We have almost two weeks in total minus travel days and overnight in Rome. We do plan to use mostly trains but aren't opposed to renting a car.

What exactly are you concerned about?

Since you know your date of travel buy your train tix in advance (take advantage of discounts as well)
Absolutely no need to rent a car.

If at all possible flip your itinerary so you are leaving the AC area from Salerno- there are direct fast trains to Rome from there.

If you are leaving from Sorrento you would have to take the always overcrowded local train to Naples (SRO with luggage is not fun!) then fast train to Rome. (Or hire a driver to take you to Naples station and avoid the Circumvesuviana)

Looks like tix for May 1 are already available.

Any chance you can fly home from Naples rather than Rome? Or even better RT Naples if you are not spending any time in Rome

Thanks Christine, only that May 1st is a holiday. We are beginning our trip in Salerno, will take the fast train upon our arrival in Rome.
Your idea of a driver to the Naples station is a good one.

It won't be a problem. The trains run on holidays, too.

I realize it’s a holiday and a busy one
If you must leave the area from Sorrento then a driver to Naples is the safest option-ask your hotel for recommendations-expect to pay around 150-160 euros
Allow plenty of time before your train from Naples as traffic will be heavy
All fast trains require a seat reservation so no worries there

It’s just easier to get TO Rome from Salerno than from Sorrento and due to the holiday that would be my choice (saves money as well)

It is also easier to travel from Salerno to Amalfi to Sorrento compared to the reverse
You could always hire driver from Sorrento to Amalfi (170-180 euros)-the buses fill up immediately from Sorrento-not a pleasant experience)
Ferries are slightly better -buy tickets in advance

Check for holiday schedule of trains. May 1st in some areas there will be less trains and buses than weekdays. If schedule is available now as mentioned then that will help you.

Italo and Trenitalia both offer bus+train combinations from Sorrento. Not as frequent as taking the Circumvezuviana, but more comfortable. And you can also plan around taking the Campania Express.

But you will have to wait a bit to be able to book. May is still far away.
