train travel in Italy

We will be traveling by train in Italy and have already purchased our tickets. We received e-tickets which we printed at home. The date of the trip is on the ticket. Do we still need to validate the tickets at the station?

Hi Nancy -
No, etickets don't have to be validated. Looking at your itinerary, I'd bet that your tickets also include train, carriage and seat numbers as well as the date. Florence> Cinque Terre may be a regionale with no seat or carriage assignments. Just guessing?

nancy,

One minor point to mention is that the tickets for the express trains are specific to train, date and departure time, so can only be used on the one train listed on the ticket. If you board any other train by mistake, you'll be subject to hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot! The tickets for the Regionale trains are not specific, and can be used on any train of that type within four hours of the listed departure time.
