Train travel in italy

I understand on some trains I need reservations ahead of time, since I will be using point to point tickets vs rail passes and plan on purchasing tickets 1 or 2 days prior to departure how do I make reservations? Is it done for me at the time of purchase or do I call someone to confirm reservations.

Go to trenitalia.it to buy tickets. The "reservation" is nothing more than your assigned seats, which will be included on the "ticket". I put that in quotation marks because you don't actually need a ticket as long as you have the ticket code. It's probably a good idea to print off the ticket info to have as a back-up, though. You don't have to purchase tickets in advance, but you can take advantage of "mini fares" if you do and potentially save a lot of money. For more info, look for a website called Ron in Rome. He has the scoop on pretty much any topic you can imagine.

Thank you Angela I guess I was confused because in ricks section on trains he mentions reservations are needed ahead of time but I gather that applies to a pre purchases rail pass. I actually would prefer to buy tickets ahead of time to reduce stress and not have to worry about reservations. Can I purchase tickets from trenitalia ahead of time from the states? Thanks for your prompt response

All trains in Italy EXCEPT for the Regional Trains (slowest) require a reservation that is time, train, car, and seat specific. The reservation is automatic when the ticket is purchased. Only a rail pass has to purchase a reservation that is separate. Buying those tickets in advance only make sense to take advantage of discounted prices and willing to lock yourself into a specific train. You can do that at trenitalia.com. The discounts vary by time, train, etc., and will sell out.
