Train travel in Italy

We will be 6 adults and 1 baby travelling in Italy in May 2010 (21 days), staying in an agritourismo in Sieci, 10km north of Florence. No car but SNM train station (Florence) accessible by local train (20 minute ride). Need to know if there is a monthly pass that would cover the daily trips to and from Florence, or do we have to pay for tickets each time?
We will also be taking day trips to Venice, Rome, Lucca, Pisa, Parma, CT etc.
would it be cheaper to buy a pass or pay for individual trips?
Thank you for any advice.

Louis,

I haven't looked into your question in any detail, but my initial impression is that buying P-P tickets would still be your best option. Italy is one of the more "inexpensive" countries for P-P tickets.

Keep in mind that with a Railpass, each adult would require one. Also, some of your day trips from Firenze SMN would likely be via EuroStar Italia or other "premium" trains that require compulsory reservations (Rome and Venice especially). You'd have to pay the reservation fees separately, as they're not included in the cost of Railpasses. DON'T be caught on a train in Italy without a reservation (if required) as you'll be fined on the spot!

Hopefully one of the rail experts here will have more definitive information for you.

Happy travels!

From Sieci to Florence is 1.80 each way. To pisa is 6.20, to Venice is 44.40, to Rome is 45.80 , to Parma is 38.80, to Lucca is 6.20. This is the price each way for the base fare. You may qualify for a group discount if you are traveling together. If you take slower trains it is less. If you buy a rail pass you will need to add reservation fee to the Venice, Rome and Parma journeys. This fee is 10 euros per reservation so it could add up quickly.
