How dependable are the train schedules? And if there are delays, how long do they tend to be? Just wondering as we're taking a train and then have to connect to a flight out of Rome. Don't want to miss the flight.
There can be strikes and other delays. I would stay in Rome or at the airport the night before departure.
Heather, the train schedule out of Rome to the airport is quite regular. It runs every 30 minutes. Should there be a strike, there is always the taxi. The fare to the airport is regulated at about 44E (I think its now up to 44E). Note that the Leonardo Express takes you to terminal 3 where Americans usually have to take another bus to terminal 5. A taxi will take you directly to terminal 5. You don't say how early you must be at FCO. Usually, 3 hours in advance of your flight is recommended. Yes, you can usually get through security in much less time unless its one of those special days where it can take up to 3 hours. Many of us on the site recommend staying in Rome for your last night. If your flight is very early, the hotels are quite experienced in having a cab waiting for you at any hour of the early morning to get you to the airport.
Totally agree with staying the night before your flight. We just got back home this week from Italy and stayed our last night in Rome and the place we were staying called a cab for us as we had an early flight the next morning. The trains are very regular but there were a few trains while we were there that were an hour and a half late.
