Have you tried the trenitalia.com website? Notes for using it: you need to put in the Italian names of cities (Roma, for instance), and it will allow you to select either all the stations in that city or a particular one. Dates of travel: order for dates is day/month/year. Beside the date(s), you need to select the time (24-hour clock; put in the earliest time you want to travel, and it will also show all the rest). There will be a selection of regional trains and high-speed trains. In the case of the regional trains, there is no point buying early, since the price doesn't vary and they never sell out. However, with the high-speed trains, if you buy 120 days or less in advance, you might be able to get a bargain rate. Beware, though - if you buy a bargain ticket, you are committed to that train departure and there will be no refund if you miss it. You can also buy a regular ticket on a high-speed train.

When we made a similar trip a few years ago, from Vicenza to Rome, we found that trenitalia was offering a special deal for Sunday travel - 2 for 1 tickets in 1st class on the high speed trains. In our case we were booking just a few days in advance. Don't know if they're still doing that but you might plug in a sample date and give it a look.

There are two train companies that serve that route. The easiest way to find schedules and buy tickets is at www.Trainline.eu. Trainline will show both lines' schedules and prices, in English. Please note you cannot book the highspeed trains (which you want to take) until 120 days before the travel date, but you can enter a phony date to get an idea of schedules.
