We are taking the Bernina Express from Samedan, Switzerland to Tirano and want to take the train from Tirano to Varenna, Italy, instead of the bus. When I attempt to look up train travel, the site says "N/A". Is this true? The train has a schedule. It looks like there is a train. Can anyone help me with this?
Marissa, That's an easy question to answer, and that's also an easy rail trip. Trains generally depart Tirano every two hours, at ten minutes after the hour (11:10, 13:10, etc.). The trip to Varenna is 1H:26M and Second Class fare is currently listed at €6.25. It's a Regionale train, so be sure to validate your ticket! When researching the trips, specify Varenna Esino as your destination station. Be prepared to disembark as soon as the train arrives, as it only stops for about one minute! Depending on much luggage you're hauling along, you may be able to walk to your Hotel in Varenna (it's mostly downhill from the station). However, there may be Taxis waiting at train arrival times. Happy travels!
Don't use RailEurope for planning.
This a Regional train, so If you look too far in advance on Trenitalia, it will say NA as Marissa found. Try a date within the next week and you will see the schedule that Ken described, with trains departing Tirano at 9:10, 11:10, 13:10, etc., and the fare.
Thank you very much. You have been very helpful. I just couldn't figure out why it was N/A.
