Train travel from Sorrento to Sicily via Naples or Salerno

My husband and I are planning to stay 3 full days and 4 nights in Sorrento. Then we plan to travel by train from Sorrento to Sicily via the train/ferry to Messina and tour Sicily.
1. Is it safe and relatively easy to travel by the Circumvesuviana (we will be traveling with our luggage) from Sorrento to Naples?
2. Would a taxi be a faster and safer choice than the Circumvesuviana?
3. If we choose to take a taxi, is it better to travel from Sorrento to Naples or Salerno to catch the train?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond. I too am looking forward to the RS Sicily book. Any idea when it will be available?
Happy travels!

Is there a reason you want to take a 9:20 train/ferry ride?

You could take the Curreri Viaggi bus from Sorrento to NAP (Naples Capo Airport) 1:15.
Then a flight 1 hour to Catania. Check Easyjet and Vueling air for times and prices.

Sicily book is supposed to be available in April.

Your question is better answered knowing the month of the trip. But the Circumvesuviana is always unpleasantly crowded and hot and infested with accordion players. It's not scary if you have been to the big cities of the world, but it's stressful to load your bag into a subway car with no luggage racks and which is loaded above its human capacity. But it's really cheap.

I don't have current prices, but for 90 Euros or so, your hotel could have their local travel partner provide an air-conditioned sedan to take you from the hotel to the ferry port. Depending on where your hotel is (see Google Maps), you might have a 20 Euro taxi ride to the Circumvesuviana station anyway. That makes it easier to spend 90 for the Imperialist Transfer. (We did.)

You do not want to take a taxi from Sorrento to Salerno. It's triple the time and much more money, more or less.

To Geri and Tim-
Thank you for your thoughtful responses. Flying from Naples to Catania makes more sense than taking the train. I am going to looking for flights!

We are going to Italy in mid-September. Hiring a car service to get to Naples airport is more appealing than the train or taxi!

Thank you again!
