What is the best train to take from Rome to Verona? There seems to be several train options. Additionally, should I purchase train tickets now when I am traveling in Sept. or at the train station? Thanks, Joan
To me, the fast train is the best. Take it from Rome to Bologna and then switch to a Verona train. You should be fine waiting to buy in September. We're in Rome right now and all the trains are packed, but that's because it's Easter time.
In addition to the Bologna option, you can take a fast train from Rome to Milano and then switch to a train for Venice that stops in Verona - I think this might give you more train possibilities. If you can get a mini-fare, you can buy the ticket in advance, but you'll be able to get the ticket when you are in Rome (lines are long but move pretty quickly, or you can buy the ticket from a kiosk). Be sure to book your ticket Rome-Verona.
Um, why not take the direct Frecciargento train from Rome to Verona, with no changes along the way? There's one that leaves Termini at 9:10 a.m. and goes through Florence and Bologna, arriving in Verona at 12:05.
I've looked at late May for scheduling and pricing examples as September may be too far out. There are numerous runs during the day to get you to Verona from Rome but as pointed out by Michael just above, there are a few direct runs where you don't need to change trains. Full fare is 88E. But, as you can see by the link below, there are mini-fares of 49E on this particular direct run. The train journey takes 2hrs 55min. If you are willing to spend 4hrs 15min on a run with one train change, you can get a mini-fare of 9E. Just note that mini-fares are for specific trains departing at a specific time and that they are non-refundable. If your travel plans can be that certain, the mini-fares are great. http://gyazo.com/d150371daee122bdee120f10c7d578d5
Looks to me as if the base fare for the direct (2nd class) is 70 euros, not 88, fwiw. The mini would save you even more, of course, but you'll have to wait a little longer before those become available for Sept. And I believe Larry may be mis-reading the mini fare at 9 euros. That's just for the second leg. You would still have to pay either 39E or 49E for the first leg to get you to Padova.
About 10 days ago (almost immediately after they became available) I got tickets for our family of 5 on this exact route Roma-Verona direct fast train for 19euro/person MINI fare. July 12 - departs Rome at around 9:15 and arrives at noon. At the time I purchased, that was the cheapest MINI fare. Others were 29, 39 or 49 Euros. To confirm what trains are running, choose an earlier date and same day of the week. Ignore the prices. Then watch for how far ahead the pricing window is open. It used to be 90 days, but when I bought my tickets it was well over 100 days ahead. So the old rule may no longer be precise. Then as soon as your travel date falls within that window (check every day when it gets close) buy your tickets. The cheapest MINI fares will go fast. Pay by Visa or MC and they will send you a confirmation email that can be printed out at home and used as your ticket, though in reality, all you REALLY need is your confirmation code to give to the conductor. Some people just show the conductor the email via their smart phones.
Ah, this new Trenitalia format. I'm so used to the old one. Michael is correct. The base fare is 70E. The 88E is the "flexible" fare. And yes, the 9E fare is for the high-speed from Padova to Verona. Regular fare there is 17E. There is a mini-fare of 49E on the Rome to Padova high-speed. Regular base fare for this part of the run is 71E. All of this is clearly visible on the link that I provided above.
FYI; Morning trains from Rome are direct 2 hours 55 min. None of that changing trains nonsense with two separate fares to pay. Be sure when doing random date searches for available trains to choose your hour of departure - otherwise it seems to default to your "home" time as your preferred hour of departure, and then you look at the schedule thinking those are your only options, but it's not. There are trains departing at all times of the day and sometimes they differ. Note also that MINI fares change with availability - change almost daily - and promotional fares like you see in Larry's link will differ from day to day.
