Train travel from Rome to Lecce

Ok, another question regarding anti theft . My husband read that on the train one should use a bike
chain, cable, to insure safety of our suitcases. We are splurging and taking first class so I am assuming that our suitcases would be with us due to more space. Any exp. with anyone regarding this? Is this a case of "better safe than sorry"?

You cannot usually keep your luggage with you, particularly if you have an assigned seat (the seat your luggage occupies may have been sold). Leaving it next to your seat in the aisle is an obstacle for anyone trying to get past you with their own luggage.

Luggage can fit between back-to-back seats on most trains, under the seat on some, in overhead racks on many, and at the end or middle of the car on some others. You will need to be able to get off the train, with your luggage, within a couple of minutes at many stations. What fun to be fumbling with chains and cables, and impede other passengers from retrieving their luggage!

If you must leave your luggage at the end of the train car, you might try sitting where you can see it. Or, if you feel you must use a cable, etc., know what the stop is before your stop so you can retrieve your luggage with enough time to get off the train.
