Train Travel from Rome to Innsbruck in Early/Mid-July, 2017

Greetings.

First and foremost, thanks in advance for those that respond. I am vacationing this Summer in Rome and thereafter, traveling to Austria. Can anyone assist with information about train transportation? General comments would be great. I also have the following specific questions:

  1. I understand that you cannot purchase tickets online until 92 days out. Is that correct?
  2. Is the transfer in Brenner complicated? The schedules say Bennero/Brenner. Is it in the same station as there is only a brief period between transfers?
  3. Is there food and beverage on the trains?
  4. Is baggage checked or loaded within the cars?
  5. Is there anything to look out for (of course, other than the Italian countryside and the Alps)?
  6. Are all tickets the same or is there a premium class?

Thanks again!

  1. Maybe more. Try to buy it, and if you can't, then it is too soon.
  2. Take a direct train from Verona or Bologna so you don't have to change at Brennero. This part of Italy is bi-lingual German & Italian, so stations are in both languages, which is Brenner in German. Actually, in this district, German is the first language. Speaking Italian would mark you as an outsider:-)
  3. The Freccia trains and the EC trains that are direct to Innsbruck from Verona or Bologna will have a snack car with food and drink. If you look at the schedule at www.bahn.com, it will show what is on the train.
  4. No, you are responsible for carrying your bags and loading them in the luggage racks in your car.
  5. Italian countryside and Alps. You said it.
  6. The Florence to Bologna Freccia trains have up to 4 classes of service: standard, premium, business, and executive on some trains, others just 1st and 2nd. The EC train will also have 1st and 2nd.

Tickets are now sold with more than 92 days in advance.

Try www.trainline.eu, they are a very efficient ticket service for international itineraries, and they will list all options. Trenitalia will not show all options for some reason.

You shall carry your luggage with yourself into the train. The train cars will have some racks to store luggage.

Brennero/Brenner is a bilingual name of the same station. It is a small station where transferring is easy. As mentioned above, though, prefer a connection with EC trains, which are more comfortable for longer trips.
