I am meeting a cruise on June 20, 2008 but will be in Rome for a couple of days before the cruise. The ships transfer from Rome to the port is very expensive per person. I have read that it is quite easy to take the train from Termini station in Rome to the port in Civitavecchia. Once at the port it is 4 block walk to the port and then there is a free shuttle from the port entrance to the ship. Has anyone done this and do they recommend it? We will be traveling with one suitcase each so I am thinking we will be OK. Maybe even just get a taxi from the train station in Civitavecchia to the ship. Thanks....
It is. We have done it four times. About three trains an hour, and will take from 45 mins to 1:15 depending on the train. It is closer to a mile walk than 4 blocks but it is easy flat along the beach walk. A shuttle is available to the port entrance for 1 Euro (last summer price). We always walk because the shuttle is always full. From the port entrance a free shuttle bus will take you to your ship's checkin point. If you are flying out of Rome on your return, buy a RT in Rome. When the cruises dock (sometimes more than one) it can a real zoo at the train station and the line to purchase tickets is impossible. The taxi will only take you to the port entrance and they are not eager because it is so short.
thanks for the insight...saves a lot of money when there are 4 of us traveling to take the train to the port.
