We have been to Rome many times and to all the major cities. Will have 3 days in Rome in October to spend some leisure time, utilizing Termini for day tripping to some "hidden gems" within an hour or so from Rome. Any suggestions? Is Civitavecchia one of those places worth visiting? Also, any neighborhoods in Rome we should consider. Thank you.
In Rome, we like Monti.
Orvieto makes a very nice day trip. There are lots of threads about it.
Ostia Antica, if you like ruins.
I wouldn't spend precious time in Italy visiting Civitavecchia. There's nothing there to see (that I can recall) except the big cruise ships that depart from there. As for neighborhoods in Rome: Trastevere, Testaccio, EUR, and Garbatella.
Villa d’Este in Tivoli, fantastic gardens & Villa. .Lake Bracciano. Volcanic lake town &, Castel. Frascati. Villas and excellent wines
All beautiful within an hour from Rome by train.
Hadrian's Villa is also at Tivoli. A slightly longer train ride would be to Tarquinia--lots of Etruscan tombs and great museum.
It's an hour and fifteen minutes from Termini to Tarquinia --- that's what we plan to do on our next trip to Italy. See the Etruscan Museum and the painted Etruscan tombs, plus it's just a nice town.
But if you haven't been to Orvieto yet, do that.
We've stayed in a few neighborhoods in Rome (Garbatella, Monti, Prati) --- Testaccio northwest of the train and metro stations remains our favorite. Easy public transportation (to Ostia Antica, for example), the market, the restaurants, the non-Catholic cemetery, the pyramid, and easy walking distance to Trastevere, the Baths of Caracalla, Capitoline museum, etc.
Thanks for all your responses. We've done all the majors in Rome, so looking for the hidden gems. Orvieto looks to be at the top of the list for day travel.
Is it true that Ostia Antica is accessed by train from Pyramide rather than Termini?
The train station Roma Porta S. Paolo with the trains to Ostia Antica is right next to the metro station Piramide.
There are several lists on this forum of things to see and do in Rome beyond the major sites --- here's one: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/unusual-ideas-for-rome
