train travel from Reggio to Rome

Hello, We are traveling in Italy in Aug/Sept. Is it possible to travel from Reggio to Rome on the train, hop off when we want, and be able to find hotels/B&Bs without a reservation? Thank you!

Anne, trains are not amenable to hop on-hop off, I think mostly for security reasons. Even if you buy a regionale ticket, there is a limited amount of time for you to complete your journey from the time you validate it before boarding the train. Between Reggio Calabria and Rome there are lots of interesting places, you should do some research to see what interests you. The train trip from Reggio C. to Rome is really long, it's a great idea to break it into smaller segments (each with its own ticket).

On a regional train you can get a ticket from A to F. Tickets are good for six hours (I think but confirm somewhere else to be sure) so you could get off at b or d and then continuing on to F. (Tickets for greater distance have a longer time life) But if you thought you were going to spend some extra along the way, then just buy the ticket to D and buy the next ticket as needed. Regional trains have no reservations and the pricing is pretty linear. A ticket from A to D plus a ticket from D to F will be the same price as a ticket from A to F or nearly so. Regional train tickets are very cheap and no discount for advance purchase. So buy them as you need them.

And the regional train that plys this route is not that good. On top of that, this trip is long and NOT very interesting.

The amount of time you have to finish your journey depends on how far you are travelimg - from Reggio Calabria it can take at least 6 hours to get to Rome.
