train travel from Reggio Di Calabria

Hello,

We will be turning our car in Reggio di Calabria and plan on taking a train from Reggio Di Calabria to Sorrento but from what I am seeing the train does not go to Sorrento it goes to Salerno so if I was to take the train to Salerno how would you recommend I get to Sorrento is there a bus from the Salerno Train station? Also when I go into the Trenitalia site it offers several Salerno's and I am not sure which is the correct one for the Amalfi coast? If anyone has experience or knowledge please help. Thank you.

You want Salerno from the pull-down menu at Trenitalia. There is a major bus stop outside the station, you can ask at the info desk at the station which bus to take to Sorrento.

Continue on to Naples and change to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento.

You may have carefully considered your transportation options and decided against keeping your rental car on the mainland, or you may have definite reasons for wanting to go by train, but for what it's worth, on our December/January trip 2 years ago, we rented on Sicily, drove around Sicily then took the car ferry to Reggio di Calabria, and continued driving all the way to Sorrento (stopping 1 night in Castrovolare and one night in Eboli on the way, with fabulous dinners in each place). This allowed us to stop and see the Greek ruins at Paestum, to stop and get buffalo mozzarella, and to have a car in Sorrento for driving to Pompeii and other sights in the area for a few days. We eventually turned in the car in Sorrento and took the train to Rome for our flight home. If you're determined to ditch the car upon departing Sicily, why take it all the way to Reggio di C? You have to pay extra to ferry the car across the Strait of Messina, when you might just be able to turn in the car in Messina, then take the ferry as foot passengers to Reggio Di C, and continue by train from there. Or (I'm not certain this is an option) start your train journey in Messina, riding the ferry, and continuing by train once the ferry gets across to Reggio di C?

The reason we are keeping our car is because we are planning on spending 3 nights somewhere around the toe of the boot maybe Skilla. Do you think it will be more complicated to take the train because it does not go directly to Sorrento, I don't want to take the train to Naples and than back down to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana train. There are 7 of us with a total of 3 cars. It sounds like we either keep the cars or take the train to Salerno and than a bus to Sorrento. Thank you all for your help.

A little further up the boot from Scilla is Tropea. Gorgeous. best food is on the side streets. It's near a regional airport and train hub, maybe you can drop the car there and take the train the rest of the way. I would suggest a stop in Paestum if possible, either by car or train (if by car, you can turn it in at Salerno, but then it's only a short drive to Sorrento).

Keep the car and drive it to Sorrento. You need a car to visit Calabria.
Then in Sorrento, if you want to return the car, you can, it's up to you. All rental companies have an office in Sorrento. Or you can keep it and drive it to wherever you are going next.

How is the drive on the autostrada from Reggio di Calabria to Sorrento? 30 years ago we drove in some of that area and I remember the tolls having black and you made your own rules of the road.

Two years ago there was a lot of construction in late December, but no tolls anywhere. As a result, when traffic moved it moved very smoothly and fast, but there were slowdowns and lots of orange cones and drums. That may have changed somewhat by now.

The drive in Calabria was spectacular by the way, through tall green mountains, with the highway suspended high above the valley floor in many places.

I would say that "making your own rules of the road" can apply in some crowded towns around Sorrento and Pompei, but not on the autostrada.
