Train travel from Naples to Pompeii and Sorrento options

Hello - looking for updated recommendations on train travel for our October trip from Naples to Sorrento with a stop in Pompeii.

I understand that with the tourist train Campania Express train a rider buys one ticket and can stop and reboard in Pompeii and continue to Sorrento.

I'm unclear about the ticketing for the local Circumvesuviana train and whether this trip would require two tickets per person? Can these tickets be purchased in advance, even though seats are not reserved? Also, we will be traveling with luggage which we will store when we disembark in Pompeii.

The Travel Forum comments on this subject are dated. Thanks in advance for sharing your more recent experience and recommendations. JC

Do you understand that the Campania Express runs on the same tracks as the Circumvesuviana? Some people say the Campania Express does not have enough departures to be as useful as they would like. No personal experience. The regular jammed, hot, noisy Circumvesuviana trains are roughly half-hourly, although a schedule can be downloaded.

The regular Circumvesuviana is a commuter train, so no Hop On Hop Off. But it is dirt cheap. It's not a hardship if you buy all the tickets (say, at the Naples staffed booth) before you start the two-stop journey. You have to validate the ticket in the machine on the platform before you board the train.

There is luggage checking at the Pompeii Scavi entrance, and I think also at the train station. Most posters here report using the Pompeii Scavi check counter. I think it's free.

If for some reason you end up buying train tickets at a newsstand rather than the ticket office, expect to pay with cash rather than credit card.

I have taken the Campania Express and we just purchased the tickets the day of and were escorted to the track by these two employees who ensured only ticket holders got on the train. The train was nothing special, but it did have air conditioning and was not crowded. We were coming from Rome with our final destination Sorrento, so we had luggage. In Naples we went to the TI office to find out the schedule for the Campania and had planned on a few hours between our trains to go get Pizza, storing our luggage. The train ran once every four hours I think.
