Hello, Another post I saw mentioned a train from Munich to Venice, through Innsbruck, Bolzano, Verona, and then over to Venice. It sounds amazing. Will be traveling in September, all adults. Does anyone have any more information on this trip? Is it possible to spend a night or two in towns along the way, and then get back on the train? Would we have to book each individual train ticket from town to town, or do we book the entire journey with the ability to get on and off. I apologize if my question is confusing. Again, your help is much appreciated.
Hi. I have followed this route before in both directions. Generally, I have done what you describe: getting off and spending a night or two in Innsbruck or Bolzano. I have always booked my tickets per segment of where I stayed overnight, for example, Munich to Innsbruck; Innsbruck to Venice. I suppose there are other ways of managing this.
To get started, I would look at the information at the Man in Seat 61 website. This page gives you info regarding trains leaving from Munich. At the top of the page, select your destination from the drop down. The information for Munich to Venice, Milan, Florence, Rome & Italy is about a 1/4 of the way down the page if you scroll. There are links, photos, and even links to YouTube videos there. I enjoy taking the Brenner Pass route.
I hope you get to do this.
PS, while you plan, you may want to look for information on the Cow Parades that may be taking place at this time of the year. I visited a small one outside Innsbruck on year in September. Fun.
There are many trains plying the route from Munich, Innsbruck, Bolzano, Verona, to Venice. Only a couple of direct trains, but along the route I am guessing about one train every hour. So if you want to make a few stops along the way, that is no problem.
Fantastic information! This website is super helpful. We have some day trips planned too so this helps with that planning as well. Is there a lot of motion on these trains? We have a traveler with us who tends to get motion sickness. Thank you again.
I've done that route before by train and have travelled by train in Bavaria to and from Munich and also in northern Italy along the route by train on several trips. There are lots of wonderful places along the route to visit, all reachable by train. The route is very scenic. I just buy my tickets from stop to stop as I need them. Then you can pick and choose your stops along the way and stay a day or more at places of interest along your way. Here are some places you can research and consider for further exploration. Garmisch- Partenkirchen and Mittenwald, Germany; Innsbruck, Austria: Vipiteno, Bolzano, Merano, Trento, Verona, Vicenza, Padua and more. I don't know how many days you have but match your group interests to the towns along the way. I liked basing in Trento for a few days and branching out from there by train. I have done that twice. I also have visited Verona several times and it has lots to offer as a base for a few days. If you are interested in Lake Garda, it would be accessible from Verona by bus or train too, or by bus or private driver from Trento in the north. I do not get motion sickness so I cannot address that issue but the trains were comfortable. Also many of these places are also easy to get to by Flix bus. I have used the Flix busses on several occasions in different countries without problems, and once from Innsbruck to Munich and another time from Garmisch to Munich. They are also generally comfortable and budget friendly but the train allows you to get up and walk.
