Train travel from Milan to Venice

I am arriving 6/13/08 at Milan Airpot. I need to travel from Milan to Venice. How do I get to train station from MXP, and which one? I heard that there are 2 stations in Milan and Venice. Also, do I need Reservations?
Thanks, Chris

First, you need to travel by bus from Malpensa to Milan Centrale. This takes about an hour. Next, you want the train run from Milan Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia (yes there is a second Venezia Mestre). Most train runs that you will be on will require seat reservations. However, not to worry. When you buy the ticket, the seat reservation comes with it.

Next, you don't need an advance reservation - especially when there is a possibility that your plane could be late.

There are about 35 trains a day going from Milan to Venice. Most are high-speed Eurostars, Eurocity or ICPlus trains. Each can seat more passengers than a 747. (Calculate that out).

When you get to Milan Centrale, just go to the ticket window and say Venezia Santa Lucia or go to the self-service kiosk and buy your ticket. The machine will prompt you in English and you can pay with your credit card. It's really simple.

Chris, are you meeting a cruise ship? If so, we were advised to get off at Mestre and take a taxi to the ship. That is what we did and it worked very well for us.

Yes, We're cruising Holland America. I'm under the impression that the pier is near the St. Lucia station? I'm yet to get much info from the cruise line.

The Piazzale Roma is central to the cruise dock area. The P.A. is a very large area where buses route in and out of Venice. Taxis route in and out. The P.A. is a major vaporetto stop. It is one vaporetto stop away from the main train station (Ferrovia stop). Jump on any vaporetto that is going from your left to your right as you face the Grand canal and the next stop is the Piazzale Roma (it's off to your right). It will cost you about 6.50Euro to jump on the vaporetto for one stop.

Taking a taxi from Mestre may not be that bad. It's a short distance and the taxi can take you right up to the cruise entrance. If you take the vaporetto to the Piazzale Roma, you can walk to the cruise ships. It will take about 15 minutes. Or, you can take the #6 bus from the Piazzale Roma to the port entrance.
