train travel from cinque terra to sienna

We are planning an Italy trip and are hoping to travel by train from La Spezia Centrale to Siena, rent a car in Siena, and then drive to an Airb&b in the region near Montalcino. Using Bahn de, it doesn't seem that there is any train route connecting La Spezia Centrale to Siena. Are we missing something? Also if there is a connection (as it seems there should be) does our plan to rent a car in Siena make sense? Thanks!

To see the real schedules You must enter a day of travel before June 10 and use the official site.

Rental agencies in Siena are at the bottom of the hill, not far from the railway station, so the idea of taking the train makes sense to me.

When visiting small cities, no connections would mean no trains.

No, it doesn’t make sense, not to me at least, and in fact in similar circumstances you wouldn’t do it at home.

The only sensible way to do it is:
1 - Rent a car at La Spezia (all companies are present near the cruise port)
2 - Drive to Montalcino (3 hours on 4lane freeways except for the last 40km (25mi) from Siena to Montalcino which is on a 2 lane curvy highway).

The train to Siena is a long 3.5 hour trip with 3 separate trains (change in Pisa and Empoli), where you have to carry your own luggage up and down from train to platform to train. Then from Siena you still need to travel almost one hour on the same curvy highway to Montalcino.

So it’s either a 3+ hour drive with luggage comfortably in the trunk, or a 5 hour journey with multiple modes of transportation, in all of which, you must carry your own luggage.

Your choice my friend. You plan to rent a car anyway, you might as well do it from the get go.
