train travel & car rental in Tuscany

My wife and I will be travelling from Venice to Tuscany by train and spending three nights near Monteverchi. I really want to avoid picking up the rental car in Florence so the alternatives seem to be Arezzo & Siena. We are leaning towards Arezzo. Could you comment on the pros and cons of each location. Also, any tips on which train connections would be best would be appreciated. Thanks!

Surprise. Arezzo also has some dreaded ZTLs. You can rent in Florence, you just need to make sure that the rental location is not in one of the restricted zones. Perhaps others can recommend a couple. The Florence airport is one place. Just be near the highway so that you can immediately leave the city. Also note that you should check with your credit card to see if their CDW type of insurance covers you in Italy. You might get another surprise there. You might need to accept the full CDW on your rental car.

If you are making train connections from Venice, you may not have the luxury of picking the city to do so. Many trains connect in Bologna. We have done that several times and it will not be difficult. Not a huge station like Milan (huge!) I recommend you try to pick up your car at an airport a bit out of town. Driving in Florence, or almost any Italian city, is confusing at best. Been there, done that! If you choose a city with no airport, try a train station that is on the edge of town. Never been to Arezzo, but Siena is a stunning city, particularly in the evening if you can stay.
