Train travel between Orvieto and Rome, or lack there of??

We are currently in Assisi. When I planned my trip, I double checked on the Trenitalia website the RS guidebook’s connection info of about 1.5 hour, direct train travel between Rome Termini and Orvieto. However when we arrived Rome Termini a few days ago from Naples at 11:30, we discovered that the only direct train was at about 3:30. The rest of the options involved one or two connections, by bus. We didn’t get to Orvieto until about 4:30.
So now, we need to return a car in Orvieto on February 18 and get back to Rome. Again, I see routes with 1 or 2 connections by bus. Can anyone tell me what has happened on this route? Right now, I do not see anything with 0 connections on Trenitalia. I do see something at about 3:30 that goes to Tibertina.
Additional comments:
*anyone planning day trips to Orvieto may want to rethink their plans
*The train to our first stop (Orte) in route to Orvieto left from 2est. 2 est is a fair distance from the other tracks, plus there is some construction going on, and they didn’t even post the platform until about 15 minutes prior. We had to hustle. Plan accordingly.

Using the TrenItalia app, I just found a number of direct trains on the 18th going from Orvieto to Termini as well as some to Tibutrtina. If you are going to FCO, no need to go from Tiburtina to Termini. You can get a train from Tiburtina to FCO.

We are not going to the airport.

Looking at the app and website, it appears if I choose Centrale, they are counting the funicular. Still using the just “Orvieto” most solutions start from a train and switch to a bus. There are a couple direct/no change trains to Termini at about 5:30pm and 6:45pm, which is much too late, getting us to Rome in the dark.

If I choose Tibertina, there are two, one at about 11:40 and one at 3:30, and then I’m having to change to a metro.

I'm looking at Trenitalia now (as I did last night).

I am seeing direct [dettagli] trains to Tiburtina at 1138, 1527 (and others later), , a 1327 to Tiburtina with a change at Orte (to a bus to Tiburtina) and a 1428 to Tiburtina with a 40 minute change at Orte

also one to Termini direct at 1120 with a 14 minute change at Orte

also to Termini at 1729, 1844 (and others later)

With regard to the changes in Orte (a 7 platform station) I can see on live station departure boards while travelling (like this- https://iechub.rfi.it/ArriviPartenze/en/ArrivalsDepartures/Monitor?Arrivals=True&Search=&PlaceId=1959) where my forward train is leaving from, so can plan accordingly.

Given that it is 4 stops on Metro Line B from Rome Tiburtina to Termini I personally would be happy with that level of service

Yes, I did see those solutions. Since we did the change to a bus to get us to Orvieto, I’d say it was anything but smooth as it took 4 hours to get to Orvieto centrale (which still isn’t to the city center/old town). Fortunately this time we will be returning the car by the train station. We will be driving from Assisi so the morning solutions don’t work.

I’m not following on the comment re. 11:20 “direct” train to Termini, it changes in Orte. We couldn’t get there in time, but would have been a decent option.

It looks like we’ll have to take a 3:30 to Tiburtina and change to a metro if we don’t want to change to a bus with suitcases.

The RS guidebook under connections says it takes 1.5 hours, direct trains from Termini every 1-2 hours which is definitely not the case.

I also checked Flix

I go on the Trenitalia website and look for Orvieto > Roma Termini connections tomorrow, Feb. 17th, starting at 7am.

I see no connections, direct ICs at 7.25, 18.44, 19.30, 20.20
No connections, direct regionale at 17.29, 21.29, 23.25
Combinations of trains with connections at 11.20, 11.38, 14.28, 16.27
Connections involving a bus at 7.10, 13.27

If going to Tiburtina is also good, add
8.57 with bus connection, 19.43

Not ideal but still some service. Orvieto is not in the same region as Rome so probably nobody wants to pay for an intensive direct service. But the main thing is likely that the terminal section of the railway near Rome is working at full capacity and in need of serious maintenance, till March 7th they have to stop traffic at some times to renew the tracks.

The regional trains are normally more frequent and direct to Termini (or sometimes Tiburtina).

I rechecked what I’d planned for my 2023 trip and that train is not currently operating. As posters said previously, it appears to be construction limiting train capacity near central Rome.

Also good call out on extra time for people going to platforms 1est/2est at Termini. It is a hike! The track arrangement at Termini is such that the regional trains from Orte, Chiusi, etc approach from the East of the station. To avoid crossing over lots of other tracks and blocking other trains, they generally use the eastern side of the station. Similarly the Leonardo Express from FCO arrives from the west and uses tracks on the far west side of the station.

@Ksea, yes, thanks, I was sure I’d checked the travel between termini and Orvieto when I purchased my tickets, for Naples to Termini, a few months ago. There were more trains and more direct trains than there are now.

We ended up taking a train from Orvieto at 15:27 to Tibertina. It worked pretty well. Much better than going the opposite direction when we went from Termini to Orvieto Centrale. Waited 1.5 hours for a train to Orte where we changed to a bus, then funicular to a bus, that didn’t get into city center. We had hoped to leave Orvieto midday to give us some time in Rome, but with the extra Umbria time, we were able to get in some time for Spoleto. Amazing cathedral!

We spoke to a couple that did a day trip and were on the 15:27 to Tibertina. They felt it was quite a tiring day for the little amount of time they had for Orvieto. They got the cathedral in and not much else.

In spite of the logistics, we had a wonderful time in Orvieto, Assisi and the lovely region of Umbria. We certainly didn’t expect green, budding trees and even some flowers.
