We plan to take a train from Salerno to FCO to stay in hotel and catch early morning flight. The train has one connection in Rome Termini station, connection time is 10 minutes. It seems like all the connection times are 10-15 minutes. Sounds awful tight for tourist that don't know their way around the station. Are the platform usually near each other?
If you are traveling to FCO, your connection at Termini is with the Leonardo Express train, a regional train. There is one every 30 min. If you don’t make the one 10 min after your arrival from Salerno, you can simply take the next Leonardo Express 30 min later without any penalty.
And the Leonard Express has no seat reservations. It is just a commuting run to the airport. Grab any seat or stand. So no need to worry about a connection time. And ten minutes is probably too tight. The last time we used the LE it was on track 25 (?), last track on the far right facing the tracks/platforms. It was clearly marked.
10-15 minutes is actually not awfully tight for a train connection. 2 minutes I would call tight. anything up to 10 minutes normal, and above that the railway is wasting my time unnecessarily.
10 minutes is tight because if the first train is even five minutes late, it turns into a big rush. But, as already correctly pointed, if you miss the connection another train will leave in 30 minutes; just check you can afford to be 30 minutes late.
Are the platform usually near each other?
Not sure where a Salerno train would typically arrive but the Leonardo Express trains typically depart from the same platforms (looks like 23/24) which are on one edge of the station.
Az everyone has posted it is not an issue. Just purchase your tickets in Salerno and take your time on transferring at Termini. Smart move on getting a hotel at FCO, saves a lot of stress.
