I am going the opposite direction, also in May, and found quite reasonably priced flights between Naples and Palermo on Volotea Airlines. If you have a choice of days to fly, you may find that advance ticket purchases on some days are as low as 46 Euros or so. Watch the baggage guidelines though, especially size and weight for a single carry-on bag. I believe there may be a ferry directly from Sorrento to Naples Airport as well.

I would check airfares, it's a long train trip.

To travel by train during the day you would need to take the bus from Sorrento to Salerno. There are two direct IC trains each day between Salerno and Palermo. The ride takes 8 1/2 hours. For timetables and booking use trenitalia.com. If you book ASAP (up to 120 days allowed), you can get a Super Economy fare of €19.00 or an Economy fare of €29.00. The base (standard) 2nd class fare is €53.50.

You also could take a night train from Naples to Messina and connect there to a train to Palermo.

Of course you can take the train to Sicily. We did that from Salerno to Taormino and the train cars are simply detached and loaded on the ferry. We got off the train for the ferry ride, but many people stayed on board. It wasn't a short trip, but neither is the transit to the airport, going through security, waiting for your flight, etc. We like trains and it's always a good story to tell people about how our train went right on the ferry.
