We are traveling by train to several cities in Italy starting with Rome to Venice. In Rick's book he suggests paying the extra to travel first class. Has anyone found that there is that much difference between first and second class?
I have to disagree with Rick. We travel only second-class. It's fine and it saves us a big chunk of money. See roninrome.com for a good description of the differences. http://www.roninrome.com/%20transportation/1st-class-versus-2nd-class
We ride 2nd class nearly all the time and think it is fine.
To me, the only different between first and second class is that the first class have big table between the two seats which you can eat, read or work on your computer.
The second class might not have a table.
Margie, I very rarely ever buy first class tickets, as I don't believe the extra cost is worthwhile. Some of the second class cars have somewhat "inefficient" air conditioning, but that's also true of some first class carriages.
Another bonus (at least for me) with 2nd class is that that's where more Italians ride.
Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going with second class.
If you're just taking trips of a couple of hours, is it worth the difference for first class? Probably not. Some trips around the country are just not that long.
