Train travel 2012

We'll be traveling from Venice to Florence then three days later from Florence to Rome this summer. I'd prefer to get from one to the next as quickly and comfortably as possible (i.e., high-speed, first-class, if possible). I'm also reading comments on this site that indicate that I don't need to pre-purchase my tickets more than a few days in advance. Hints, anyone?

If you know your travel dates, then book in advance to get the mini fare discounts offered. However, as the schedules change in June, you may not be able to book very far in advance, depending on the dates of your trip. Just keep checking every week or so until the schedules open up for the trains you want. If you wait until you are in country, you'll most likely get seats, but may not get the schedule you prefer nor the possible discount.

Thanks, Laurel. I'll start checking in early June (we don't leave until very late June).
