Train Travel

We are planning a Souther Italy trip for this fall and I am having a hard time figuring out the train schedules. We will fly into Rome and the head to Latina (we have a half marathon there). From Latina we will go to Sorrento for a few days. From Sorrento we would like to take day trips to Naples and Pompeii. Our final stop will be back to ROme for a few days. Can anyone provide any insight on which trains to take, schedules, costs, if reservations are needed, etc? Thanks in advance for your help!

You might find bahn.de easier to use for schedule information. Just plug in the cities and see what is shown. Reservations are rarely needed so buy tickets as you need them. What kind of problems are you having in understanding the schedules?

From Rome to Latina you'll take a regional train or an inner city train. It'll cost either 3.50 or 7.50 depending on the train. From Latina you will go to Naples and then get the circumvesuviana commuter train to Sorrento. You will take the same commuter train to do your day trip to pompeii and to get back to Naples to take the train back to Rome.

To get from Latina to Naples is from 8.50- 15.50, the commuter train is about 7 euros each way and to get from Naples to Rome is 44 euros for the high speed train.

use the trenitalia site to look up fares and schedules. You won't find the schedule for the commuter train as that is a different company.

From Naples you take a private train line, Circumvesuviana, to Pompeii or Sorrento. For the other journeys, look on the trenitalia site. They don't have schedules up for the fall, so just pick an earlier date (eg. during the summer) to get an idea of the schedules and prices. They will change slightly in the fall, but not drastically.
