Train transfer in Naples

We will be traveling from Sorrento to Florence in June. Is 30 minutes enough time to transfer from the Garibaldi station to Napoli Centrale? We can walk this, right? Should we buy a ticket in advance for the Naples to Florence trip?

No, if money is less important to you than flexibility.

Yes, if money is more important to you than flexibility.

30 minutes is more than enough time, if all is on schedule. These are in essence the same station - Garibaldi is the lower level, go upstairs and you are in centrale.

If you know your dates and times, buy ahead - it's cheaper for longer routes like Naples to Florence. If you want to buy that day when you leave Sorrento you can, but it will cost more.

If you are worried about time, take an earlier Circumvesuviana train. They run every 30 minutes.

Thirty minutes is all the time in the world, as platforms are sometimes not posted until 15 minutes before.

In Aug 2019 we did the same route: departed from Sorrento to catch a train in Naples. The manager of the Sorrento apt where we stayed recommending taking a Sorrento-Naples Circumvesuviana train earlier than the one we planned in order to a minimize the risk of missing our train from Naples. She warned that Circumvesuviana trains are sometimes cancelled or delayed with no notice. We took her advice.

We had received a similar warning from a tour guide we had. He said that the people who live in the area sarcastically refer to the Circumvesuviana train as "a very special local train".

In any case, during our stay in Sorrento we used the Circumvesuviana train several times and didn't experience any cancellations or delays. We did have a delay purchasing a ticket in Sorrento one day and nearly missed our train because an inspector of some sort had showed up without notice and was taking the time of the single ticket vendor as he did his inspection of her records.

Faye, (1) extra time is always better than not quite enough time (2) when I made this same trip, some years ago, the escalator in Naples was broken, and everyone had to walk up the long, steep escalator, with their baggage; another good lesson to pack what you can carry; (3) whenever possible, I try to arrive at the station with my ticket in hand, even if bought earlier that day or the day before, because I have missed trains due to ticket machines that did not work coupled with very long ticket lines.
